Note: Completed their Probation Periods – the probation period for PCDA is 3 years, whilst all other new recruit entry routes have a probation period of 2 years. Only those who joined 2 or 3 years ago respectively will have completed by now (1st Feb 2024), providing they didn’t leave before the end of the 2 or 3 year period. Hence there are few PCDA joiners from 2021 who have already completed their probation period and similarly few joiners from 2022 for the other entry routes (given there has not been a full 2 or 3 year period since they joined).

The cost of police officer training varies by entry route due to the different learning requirements of each route and the availability of financial support from the Apprenticeship levy for the PCDA programme.

Work was completed in mid-2023 at a national level to estimate the total delivery cost of formal learning for the different programmes and these are outlined below:

  • PCDA = £7,400 to £15,000 (after the Apprenticeship Levy drawdown)
  • DHEP = £18,000
  • PPD = £6,000 to £9,000
  • PCEP = £17,000
