Dangerous Dogs (345A/21)
Request
When a dog is seized under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.
And an owner is asked to disclaim their dog or voluntarily does so.
1: Do you give the owners a chance to seek advice and to rescind that disclaimer.
2: Where an owner disclaims their dog. Do you have or allow a cooling off period, allowing the owner to rescind it before the dog is euthanized.
3: If so, what period of time do you allow.
Response
1: Do you give the owners a chance to seek advice and to rescind that disclaimer.
This depends on the circumstances of the incident – in some cases the owner may take the dog to be euthanized themselves and we will facilitate it with them. There are occasions when we will take the dog direct to the vets but this is few and far between and it is captured on Body Worn Video and a disclaimer is signed.
2: Where an owner disclaims their dog. Do you have or allow a cooling off period, allowing the owner to rescind it before the dog is euthanized.
In most cases yes 24 hours is given and we contact them to make sure they understand the dog is being put to sleep.
3: If so, what period of time do you allow.
24 hours
