Car Theft (701A/22)
Request
I would like to request the number of car thefts (vehicle’s themselves) and thefts from motor vehicles, reported for Earlsdon, Coventry CV5 over the last 5 calendar years.
Clarification received 30/05/2022:
Part 1 is just theft of cars themselves.
Part 2 is theft from motor vehicles to include cars, vans, motorcycles.
If part 2 is too vast within the time limit allowed, please only provide thefts from cars only.
Response
Our data are not organised in such a way as to allow us to provide this information within the appropriate (cost) limit under the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act.
This is because our current crime database does not have the facility to search for and retrieve recording fields that denote the vehicle type. This means that in order to answer part 1 (car thefts) we would have to retrieve all records for the offence of theft of a motor vehicle, and then manually review each one to identify what the vehicle type was. Due to the volume of data, to conduct this manual search would exceed the appropriate limit (FOIA, s.12).
This means that the cost of providing you with the information is above the amount to which we are legally required to respond i.e. the cost of locating and retrieving the information exceeds the ‘appropriate level’ as stated in the Freedom of Information (Fees and Appropriate Limit) Regulations 2004.
In accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000, this letter acts as a Refusal Notice for this part of the request and if one part of a request exceeds the fees limit then S12 of the Act applies to the whole request.
However, under Section 16 of the Act I have a duty to provide advice and assistance in relation to your request and can provide the number of all vehicles stolen and thefts from vehicles in Earlsdon, Coventry CV5 over the last 5 calendar years, as this was retrieved during our initial research.
