It is not possible to predict when an officer will retire. Based upon those who are fully protected, there are 1185 who will retire from the 1987 scheme. In addition there are 129 officers for whom it is currently estimated that they could retire before entering the CARE scheme.
In addition to the offer I made, our pension expert has provided additional information, which I have provided to assist, I trust you will find this additional guidance useful.
How many widows have had their pensions granted for life as a result of the amendments to the Police (Injury Benefit) Regulations 2006 in January 2016?
This information is not centrally recorded. It should be noted that it is not a matter of pensions being “granted for life”. A widow whose husband died on duty could report to us today that she re-married three years ago, and therefore have her entitlement stopped. A decision to stop or not stop a widow’s pension would and will be made on a case-by-case basis.
