Coronavirus (COVID-19)

How we are working to keep our FOI Requests running during COVID-19

Taser Use (2595_16)

I’d be grateful if you could provide me with the following information for the past five years:

  1. the number of times an officer has physically drawn a taser gun.
  1. the number of times an officer has pointed a taser gun at a member of the public (i.e. red dotted).
  1. the number of times an officer has discharged his/her taser.

Please provide data for the past five years broken by the different geographical divisions of your force.

Unfortunately we do not hold information in relation to your request for 2011 and 2012. However we do hold data for 2013 to 2015 and this is attached (2595_attachment_01.pdf).

It should be noted that we have removed incidents where it was recorded that the Taser use was against an animal. However there are a number of records (approximately 176 in 2013, 82 in 2014 and 3 in 2015) where this detail was not recorded. These have been included in the attached data, but we cannot be certain whether all relate to Taser use against a person.

Every effort is made to ensure that the figures presented are accurate and complete. However, it is important to note that these data have been extracted from a number of data sources used by forces for police purposes. The detail collected to respond specifically to your request is subject to the inaccuracies inherent in any large scale recording system. As a consequence, care should be taken to ensure data collection processes and their inevitable limitations are taken into account when interpreting those data.

The figures provided therefore are our best interpretation of relevance of data to your request, but you should be aware that the collation of figures for ad hoc requests may have limitations and this should be taken into account when those data are used.

If you decide to write an article / use the enclosed data we would ask you to take into consideration the factors highlighted in this document so as to not mislead members of the public or official bodies, or misrepresent the relevance of the whole or any part of this disclosed material.
