Stop and Search (240A/20)

Request

I am writing to make an open government request for all the information to which I am entitled under the Freedom of Information Act.

Please send me:

1) The (i) number of times police have used Stop and Search measures since the UK lockdown was introduced on 23rd March 2020 and (ii) the number of times police had used Stop and Search measures from 23rd March 2019 to 22nd March 2020.

2) Out of the total number of times Stop and Search measures have been used by police since the UK lockdown was introduced on 23rd March 2020, the number that were used on black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) individuals.

3) Out of the total number of times Stop and Search measures have been used by police between 23rd March 2019 and 22nd March 2020, the number of Stop and Search measures used by police on black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) individuals.

Response

Please find our response below.

1) The (i) number of times police have used Stop and Search measures since the UK lockdown was introduced on 23rd March 2020 and (ii) the number of times police had used Stop and Search measures from 23rd March 2019 to 22nd March 2020.

(i) From 23rd March until 7th June 2020 = 5,388 stop and search of all types (i.e. Section 1, Misuse drugs, Section 60 etc.)

(ii) From 23rd March 2019 until March 22nd 2020 = 24,859 stop and search of all types (i.e. Section 1, Misuse drugs, Section 60 etc.)

2) Out of the total number of times Stop and Search measures have been used by police since the UK lockdown was introduced on 23rd March 2020, the number that were used on black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) individuals.

2,120 White; 1,540 Asian; 648 Black; 342 Mixed. Remaining figures not applicable (i.e. a vehicle) or ethnicity not stated.

3) Out of the total number of times Stop and Search measures have been used by police between 23rd March 2019 and 22nd March 2020, the number of Stop and Search measures used by police on black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) individuals

9,675 White; 6,710 Asian; 3,750 Black; 1,985 Mixed. Remaining figures not applicable (i.e. a vehicle) or ethnicity not stated.

Every effort is made to ensure that the figures presented are accurate and complete. However, it is important to note that these data have been extracted from a number of data sources used by forces for police purposes. The detail collected to respond specifically to your request is subject to the inaccuracies inherent in any large scale recording system. As a consequence, care should be taken to ensure data collection processes and their inevitable limitations are taken into account when interpreting those data.

The figures provided therefore are our best interpretation of relevance of data to your request, but you should be aware that the collation of figures for ad hoc requests may have limitations and this should be taken into account when those data are used.

If you decide to write an article / use the enclosed data we would ask you to take into consideration the factors highlighted in this document so as to not mislead members of the public or official bodies, or misrepresent the relevance of the whole or any part of this disclosed material.
