How we are working to keep our FOI Requests running during COVID-19

Pedal Cycle FPNs(1104_17)

I am making a request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 for information relating to Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) issued for pedal cycle offences.

This request covers all offences in which the vehicle involved was a pedal cycle. This includes (but is not limited to) contravening automatic traffic signals, cycling on a footway and using a pedal cycle without lights at night.

Can you tell me:

1)      How many FPNs were issued by your force for all pedal cycle-related offences over the last five years? Please provide this information for the calendar years 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013 and 2012. Note: if this information is not available by calendar year, please provide it in whichever form it is available (eg. by last five financial years).

2)      If possible, please show how many of these FPNs were specifically issued for the offences of:

  1. i)                    Contravening automatic traffic signals;
  2. ii)                   Cycling on the footway.

Again, please provide this information for each of the last five years.

Note, if answering point (2) would be deemed to exceed the reasonable cost limit of an FOI request, please ignore point (2) and just provide the answer to point (1

Please find attached our response.

Every effort is made to ensure that the figures presented are accurate and complete. However, it is important to note that these data have been extracted from a number of data sources used by forces for police purposes. The detail collected to respond specifically to your request is subject to the inaccuracies inherent in any large scale recording system. As a consequence, care should be taken to ensure data collection processes and their inevitable limitations are taken into account when interpreting those data.

] The figures provided therefore are our best interpretation of relevance of data to your request, but you should be aware that the collation of figures for ad hoc requests may have limitations and this should be taken into account when those data are used.

If you decide to write an article / use the enclosed data we would ask you to take into consideration the factors highlighted in this document so as to not mislead members of the public or official bodies, or misrepresent the relevance of the whole or any part of this disclosed material.
