M5 Motorway (1258/19)
I would like to make a Freedom of Information request concerning the number of drivers that have exceeded the 50 miles per hour and 30 miles per hour temporary speed limits through the current road works on the M5 Motorway between junctions 4 and 1, northbound. The road works contain a contra-flow and reduced to two opposing lanes.
Please find enclosed our response.
Please note that these data should be interpreted with caution.
Every effort is made to ensure that the figures presented are accurate and complete. However, it is important to note that these data have been extracted from a number of data sources used by forces for police purposes. The detail collected to respond specifically to your request is subject to the inaccuracies inherent in any large scale recording system. As a consequence, care should be taken to ensure data collection processes and their inevitable limitations are taken into account when interpreting those data.
The figures provided therefore are our best interpretation of relevance of data to your request, but you should be aware that the collation of figures for ad hoc requests may have limitations and this should be taken into account when those data are used.
The enforcement section is the 30mph speed limit and we are only enforcing the 30mph speed limit as this is what Highways England wanted.us to enforce.
The 50mph speed limit was introduced to try and reduce everyone’s speed before hitting the main 30mph area, and hopefully reduce incidents that could occur, again on advice from Highways England.
We also only enforce between junctions 1 & 2 in both directions. Junction 4 of the M5 comes under West Mercia., therefore they may hold this data.
In 2017 – 1511 offences (this is for both directions)
In 2018 – 2543 offences (this is for both directions)
In 2019 (up to the 21st Jan) 87 offences (this is for both directions)
