Lost / Found Property (7106_15)
Please can you provide me with a list of the items handed into lost property at police stations in Dudley, Sandwell and Walsall during the past five years.
Please find attached our response.
Lost property is not handed into West Midlands Police. Lost property is recorded by the force, whereby a member of the public is reporting the loss of their property. Found property, are items which appear to have been lost, but have been found by Police Officers, PCSO’s or members of the public and handed in, in order for West Midlands Police to try and locate the rightful owner.
Therefore, the figures I have been able to provide, are for all found property handed into the Police Stations covered by Dudley, Sandwell and Walsall Local Policing Units over the last five years.
Please note, some of the property will have been initially booked in as a found entry, but subsequently transferred into crime property following an error on the part of the person creating or subsequent enquiries into tracing the owner led it to being a crime exhibit.
It is important to note that the attached data includes a number of items which would appear to have been incorrectly recorded as ‘found’ property rather than ‘crime’ property (for example Fingernail Scrapings and Swab Samples). However, there is no way for us to easily identify precisely which of the items have been mis-classified.
Every effort is made to ensure that the figures presented are accurate and complete. However, it is important to note that these data have been extracted from a number of data sources used by forces for police purposes. The detail collected to respond specifically to your request is subject to the inaccuracies inherent in any large scale recording system. As a consequence, care should be taken to ensure data collection processes and their inevitable limitations are taken into account when interpreting those data.
The figures provided therefore are our best interpretation of relevance of data to your request, but you should be aware that the collation of figures for ad hoc requests may have limitations and this should be taken into account when those data are used.
If you decide to write an article / use the enclosed data we would ask you to take into consideration the factors highlighted in this document so as to not mislead members of the public or official bodies, or misrepresent the relevance of the whole or any part of this disclosed material.
