How we are working to keep our FOI Requests running during COVID-19

Homeless Murder (11796/17)

I request under the Freedom of Information Act 200, the following information:

– The number of homeless people who were victims of murder
– The number of homeless people who were victims of attempted murder
– The number of homeless people who were victims of manslaughter

It would be great to get this data for each year (ie, broken down by year) as far back as the records go, but I appreciate this might not be possible due to the cost limit. Even being able to get this data for each year for the last decade would be helpful.

If it helps for searching the records another police force FOI officer said they used the search: “Victim: VAGRANT/HOMELESS” within the crime mo (modus operandi), and/or contained one or more of the following search terms within the mo, crime notes and/or crime summary, BEGGAR, BEGGING, HOMELESS, NO FIXED ABODE, ROUGH%SLEEP, SLEEP%ROUGH, VAGRANT.

They then manually checked the results for relevance.

Please find below our response.

We have run numerous searches, including the same descriptions as mentioned in your request, unfortunately no data has been retrieved, please note, we searched over a ten year period and were unable to find any relevant data.

Every effort is made to ensure that the figures presented are accurate and complete. However, it is important to note that these data have been extracted from a number of data sources used by forces for police purposes. The detail collected to respond specifically to your request is subject to the inaccuracies inherent in any large scale recording system. As a consequence, care should be taken to ensure data collection processes and their inevitable limitations are taken into account when interpreting those data.

The figures provided therefore are our best interpretation of relevance of data to your request, but you should be aware that the collation of figures for ad hoc requests may have limitations and this should be taken into account when those data are used.

If you decide to write an article / use the enclosed data we would ask you to take into consideration the factors highlighted in this document so as to not mislead members of the public or official bodies, or misrepresent the relevance of the whole or any part of this disclosed material.
