Coronavirus (COVID-19)

How we are working to keep our FOI Requests running during COVID-19

Boy Racers (3554_15)

As part of my research I have been following the “boy racer clamp down” over the last year in the UK. I would be very interested in the demographic data of those involved in related activities such as the “200 names and addresses” taken down on June 22nd 2015 in Bickenhill, Solihull.

It would be extremely helpful to know the racial profile, gender, age and class background (or postcode address) of people in this single incident or even more beneficial of all of the people who have been warned or further action taken due to participation in ‘boy racer’ activities.

Please find attached our response, for the total number of names, by approximate age, where known.

The information regarding racial profile, gender and class background is not held by West Midlands Police.

With regards to postcodes I can confirm that this information is held by West Midlands Police. However, we are withholding that information since I consider that the exemption outlined below applies to it.

The Freedom of Information Act places two responsibilities on public authorities, the first of which is to confirm what information it holds and secondly to then disclose that information, unless exemptions apply.

In this case the information is exempt by virtue of the following exemption

Section 40 (2) – Personal Information

This exemption and explanatory notes are shown here:

Section 40 (2) allows for personal data to be withheld where release would breach the third party’s data protection rights.  It would be unfair to release this information where any person could be identified from the data and in this case the right to privacy outweighs any public interest in release

Every effort is made to ensure that the figures presented are accurate and complete. However, it is important to note that these data have been extracted from a number of data sources used by forces for police purposes. The detail collected to respond specifically to your request is subject to the inaccuracies inherent in any large scale recording system. As a consequence, care should be taken to ensure data collection processes and their inevitable limitations are taken into account when interpreting those data.

The figures provided therefore are our best interpretation of relevance of data to your request, but you should be aware that the collation of figures for ad hoc requests may have limitations and this should be taken into account when those data are used.

If you decide to write an article / use the enclosed data we would ask you to take into consideration the factors highlighted in this document so as to not mislead members of the public or official bodies, or misrepresent the relevance of the whole or any part of this disclosed material.
