Assaults on Emergency Workers (23A/20)

Request

Please may I request an update on the figures from January 2020 to the time this request is answered? (Most likely January to March 2020 inclusive).

This was the original request:

The Assaults on Emergency Workers (Offences) Act 2018 came into force on 13 November 2018.

The Act creates a statutory aggravating factor: Offence was committed against an emergency worker acting in the exercise of functions as such a worker.

1. Please can you disclose the number of attacks on emergency workers since

the new law came into force up to the time this request is answered? Can these figures be broken down month by month?

2. What type of emergency worker was attacked for each offence? Was the emergency careworker in question male or female? Age?

3. Details of the attacker, gender, age etc for each offence.

4. Details of the attack – what happened in each offence?

Response

Please be advised that as explained in our original response, we are unable to provide all of the information requested i.e. the details of the attack, as this would require manually reviewing and summarising each offence. I also note that in our original response we provided crimes by outcome, therefore, I have also provided this. Please find this information attached.

Every effort is made to ensure that the figures presented are accurate and complete. However, it is important to note that these data have been extracted from a number of data sources used by forces for police purposes. The detail collected to respond specifically to your request is subject to the inaccuracies inherent in any large scale recording system. As a consequence, care should be taken to ensure data collection processes and their inevitable limitations are taken into account when interpreting those data.

The figures provided therefore are our best interpretation of relevance of data to your request, but you should be aware that the collation of figures for ad hoc requests may have limitations and this should be taken into account when those data are used.

If you decide to write an article / use the enclosed data we would ask you to take into consideration the factors highlighted in this document so as to not mislead members of the public or official bodies, or misrepresent the relevance of the whole or any part of this disclosed material.
