If the information is not held in a central database, please narrow down your records to sexual offences, and then use a search function to search for the words “Scoutmaster”, “Scout” and “Scouts”. I am aware that this will not give a total picture – since there may be people who worked with the Scouts where this was not recorded because it was not known or not seen as relevant.

Response

Scoutmaster or Scout Worker / Volunteer are not occupation types that we record on our central crime recording system. Therefore as suggested, we have instead carried out a search of our crimes system for recorded Sexual Offences that contain the words “Scoutmaster”, “Scout” or “Scouts” within the Summary Notes. This search produced no results.

Please be aware however that although our search returned no information, the request was not for data in relation to when Scoutmasters or volunteers were engaged in committing sexual offences when fulfilling that role, just offenders who had that connection. It is therefore feasible that their occupation or volunteer status may not be recorded within the summary notes. This would especially be the case if the crime was not connected to the scouting activity.

Every effort is made to ensure that the information presented is accurate and complete. However, the detail collected to respond specifically to your request is subject to the inaccuracies inherent in any large scale recording system. As a consequence, care should be taken to ensure data collection processes and their inevitable limitations are taken into account when interpreting those data.

The information provided therefore is our best interpretation of relevance of data to your request, but you should be aware that the collation of figures for ad hoc requests may have limitations and this should be taken into account when those data are used.

If you decide to write an article / use the enclosed data we would ask you to take into consideration the factors highlighted in this document so as to not mislead members of the public or official bodies, or misrepresent the relevance of the whole or any part of this disclosed material.
