Request

  • Details of incidents where police firearms have been accidentally fired (known as negligent discharges) since January 2011 up until the date this request was recieved.

Please include:

  • The date and place of the incident.
  • Full details of the incident (e.g. how the accident happened, injuries resulting from the
    accident).
  • The type of firearm involved in the incident.
  • Details of any disciplinary action taken against officers responsible for a negligent discharge.

January 2011 Foot well of ARV in station yard- one round fired, no injuries. Officer caught trigger when he moved his foot. H&K MP5 Remedial training for officer responsible

February 2011 Carrying out live unload in unloading bay at Armoury. One round 9mm discharged into unloading tube, no injuries Sig 226 Pistol Remedial training for officer responsible

March 2011 Deployed at a private address. Firearms officer attempting to enter premises using door ram. Officer’s weapon became entangled with ram causing weapon to fire. Defect found on weapon’s safety catch. One officer had cuts to leg from ricochet of disintegrating bullet and debris. H&K MP5 All weapons safety catches replaced. Change in practices to entry deployments. No disciplinary proceedings. Officer made full recovery
