Forced Marriage (12212_17)

Request

Please can you proceed with answering questions 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, 11, 13, 14 and 16?

1.

In 2014/15, 2015/16 and 2016/17, how many cases were investigated in relation to suspected offences relating to forced marriages? This may include, but not be limited to, suspected offences of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse in the context of a forced marriage.

(To help identify these cases, a monitoring flag may have been applied to the case record if the suspected offence has been carried out in the context of a forced marriage. The CPS identifies forced marriage cases using this monitoring flag, so I presume police forces may do the same.)

2.

Please can you disclose the age range of the reported victims in these cases and the number of them who were aged 15 or under?

(I mean the total age range across all cases, so there is no chance of identification of victims. For instance, there may have been 20 cases investigated, with 9 of the reported victims being 15 or under and the reported victims being aged between 9 and 25. By `reported victims¿ I mean the people who the police suspected were being forced into marriages.)

How many of the reported victims in these cases were female? How many were male?

Response

Please find attached our response and note that West Midlands Police (WMP) use a forced marriage special interest marker to locate offences where forced marriage is related to or a component of the offence. Therefore the special interest marker may not specifically relate to the offence of Forced Marriage

Please also note that these data should be interpreted with caution. Comparing numbers of incidents/crimes can be misleading and does not necessarily indicate the likelihood of someone being a victim of crime. In addition, the number of incidents/crimes recorded in an area over a period of time can be influenced by a number of factors. Consequently statistics on incidents/crimes for one period may not necessarily be a good indicator of future incidents in that area.

Every effort is made to ensure that the figures presented are accurate and complete. However, it is important to note that these data have been extracted from a number of data sources used by forces for police purposes. The detail collected to respond specifically to your request is subject to the inaccuracies inherent in any large scale recording system. As a consequence, care should be taken to ensure data collection processes and their inevitable limitations are taken into account when interpreting those data.
