Anti Semitic Crimes (741/17)

Request

We would like to know about anti-Semitic crimes and non-criminal anti-Semitic incidents recorded by West Midlands Police in 2016 from April through December.
If West Midlands Police participates in the Home Office scheme to report anti-Semitic crime from April 2016 onwards, please go to Question 1.
If West Midlands Police does not participate in the Home Office scheme to report anti-Semitic crime from April 2016 onwards, please go to Question 2.
Question 1
We would be grateful if you could please provide us with :
1. The total number of anti-Semitic crimes recorded:
2. The total number of anti-Semitic violent crimes recorded which fell into the Home Office categories of “homicide”, “violence with injury” and “racially or religiously aggravated assault without injury”;
3. The total number of anti-Semitic crimes that resulted in charges being brought; and
4. The total number of anti-Semitic non-criminal incidents recorded.
Ideally, please provide a table with the following headings:
Number of anti-Semitic crimes recorded
Number of anti-Semitic crimes involving allegations of violence
Number of anti-Semitic crimes resulting in charges being brought
Number of anti-Semitic incidents reported
Question 2
We would be grateful if you could search for racially and religiously-motivated crimes and non-criminal incidents in your CRIS using the following whole keywords (i.e. not parts of words, but whole words, so that when you search for “Jew”, entries containing “jewellery” are not returned).
Since use of all the keywords might prevent you from answering this FOI request due to excessive cost, please only use the keywords (starting at the top) that can be used without incurring excessive cost.
The keywords are:
1. Jew/Jews/Jewish/Judaism
2. Semite/Semitic/Semitism
3. Antisemite/Anti-Semitic /Antisemitism
4. Yid/Yids/Yiddo/Yiddish
5.
In your response, please advise which keywords you were able to include, and for the totality of your search, please advise in each month separately
1. The total number of anti-Semitic crimes recorded;
2. The total number of anti-Semitic violent crimes recorded which fell into the Home Office categories of “homicide”, violence with injury” and “racially or religiously aggravated assault without injury”;
Number of anti-Semitic incidents reported.

Response

Please find attached our response. We do participate in the H.O scheme to report Anti-Semitic crime so Question 1 applies.

Please note: In order to retrieve all relevant information we have done a keyword search for the following: Anti Semitic, Jew, Jud and Yid.

Please note that these data should be interpreted with caution. Comparing numbers of incidents/crimes can be misleading and does not necessarily indicate the likelihood of someone being a victim of crime. In addition, the number of incidents/crimes recorded in an area over a period of time can be influenced by a number of factors. Consequently statistics on incidents/crimes for one period may not necessarily be a good indicator of future incidents in that area.

Every effort is made to ensure that the figures presented are accurate and complete. However, it is important to note that these data have been extracted from a number of data sources used by forces for police purposes. The detail collected to respond specifically to your request is subject to the inaccuracies inherent in any large scale recording system. As a consequence, care should be taken to ensure data collection processes and their inevitable limitations are taken into account when interpreting those data.

The figures provided therefore are our best interpretation of relevance of data to your request, but you should be aware that the collation of figures for ad hoc requests may have limitations and this should be taken into account when those data are used.
If you decide to write an article / use the enclosed data we would ask you to take into consideration the factors highlighted in this document so as to not mislead members of the public or official bodies, or misrepresent the relevance of the whole or any part of this disclosed material.
