Cycling Accidents (75_14)

Request

I am submitting a Freedom of Information request relating to cycling accidents.

I would like to know the number of cycling accidents reported, whether they resulted in injury and whether there was a police investigation.

I would like the figures for the past three calendar years, up until the present date broken down by policing area and month and made available in an Excel spreadsheet.

Response

We do not hold damage only Road Traffic Collisions (RTC’s). We do hold information on injury related RTC’s that have been reported to the police. Please find attached a spreadsheet which provides this information.  These data are the closest we hold to your request. They should not be interpreted as representing anything other than as described in this response.

To provide information as to whether there was a police investigation would involve researching each individual case which would exceed the appropriate cost limit as prescribed by the Act.

Every effort is made to ensure that the figures presented are accurate and complete. However, it is important to note that these data have been extracted from a number of data sources used by forces for police purposes. The detail collected to respond specifically to your request is subject to the inaccuracies inherent in any large scale recording system. As a consequence, care should be taken to ensure data collection processes and their inevitable limitations are taken into account when interpreting those data.

The figures provided therefore are our best interpretation of relevance of data to your request, but you should be aware that the collation of figures for ad hoc requests may have limitations and this should be taken into account when those data are used.
